About merging PDFs

Almost every free PDF merger uploads your documents to a server, joins them there, and gives you a link to download the result. Whatever the privacy page says, your file was on somebody else's machine, and for a signed agreement, a bank statement or a medical scan that is a genuine problem. This page does the work in your own browser using a library served from this domain, so the document never travels, and you can watch the network tab to confirm it.

Pages are copied across exactly as they are: the same page size, the same orientation, the same embedded fonts and images. Nothing is re-encoded, so quality cannot drop and text stays selectable and searchable. A file whose pages are rotated keeps that rotation, and mixed page sizes stay mixed rather than being stretched to match. Nothing is thrown away either, so if the combined file turns out too large to email, compressing it afterwards is the separate step for that.

If a file is password protected, it usually cannot be read at all without the password, and this page will say so by name instead of silently dropping it from the result. Remove the protection first, then merge.

How to merge PDF files

  1. Drop your PDFs on the box, click to choose them, or paste them in.
  2. Check the order in the list. Drag a row by its handle to move it, on a phone as well as a mouse, and use the cross to drop one. With a keyboard, focus a handle and press the up or down arrow.
  3. Each row shows its page count, so you can tell two similar files apart before merging.
  4. Press Merge. The finished file downloads straight away.
  5. Nothing is kept: reload the page and it is all gone.

Common questions about merging PDFs

Where does the merging actually happen?
No. The merging runs in JavaScript on this page, and the library that does it is served from this site rather than a third party, so no request about your file goes to anyone at all. This is worth checking rather than believing, and the check takes a minute: open the Network tab of your browser's developer tools and merge two files. One request appears, for the merging library itself, the first time you choose a file, and it carries nothing of yours. After that the library is cached, so you can switch off your connection and merge as many documents as you like.

Is there a file size or page limit?
Up to 30 files at 100 MB each, which is a limit set to protect your browser rather than our server, since there is no server. Very large scans use memory while they are open, so a few hundred pages is comfortable and a few thousand may be slow on a phone.

Will it change the quality of my pages?
No. Pages are copied, not re-rendered, so images keep their original resolution and text stays as text rather than becoming a picture of text. The merged file is usually close to the sum of the originals in size.

What happens to a password protected file?
If the protection only restricts printing or copying, the file can usually still be merged. If the contents themselves are encrypted, it cannot be opened without the password, and the file is named in the status line rather than quietly left out of the result.

Does the order of the files matter?
Yes, the merged file follows the list from top to bottom. Files are listed in the order you add them, which for a multiple selection is the order your file manager hands them over, so it is worth a glance before you press Merge. Drag a row by its handle to move it.
