About this date difference calculator

There are two honest answers to "how many days between these dates" and most tools only give one. The difference is the gap: from the 1st to the 2nd is one day. The inclusive count is the number of days touched: the 1st and the 2nd are two days. Leave, hotel stays and notice periods are usually counted inclusively, interest and deadlines by the gap. Both are shown here so you can quote the one your paperwork means.

The weekday count uses the inclusive span and splits it into Monday to Friday against Saturday and Sunday. Public holidays are not in it, because they differ by state and by year, so treat the weekday figure as the maximum number of working days and subtract your own holidays. Years, months and days from a birthday is a different sum with its own traps, and the age calculator does that one.

How to count the days between two dates

Pick the first date and the second date. Either order works: if the second is earlier, the gap is counted the other way round and you are told so.
Read the difference in days, then the same span as exact years, months and days.
Check the weekdays figure for a working day estimate, then subtract any public holidays yourself.

Common questions about date differences

Should I count both dates or not?

It depends what you are counting. A gap, which is what most contracts and interest calculations mean, excludes one end: 1 April to 2 April is one day. A duration you are living through, like leave or a hotel stay, includes both: that is two days. Both numbers are shown, so read the one your form asks for rather than assuming.

Are leap years handled?

Yes. The day count is a real calendar count, so every 29 February in the span is included, and the months figure clamps onto the last day of a short month rather than overshooting into the next one. A span of exactly one year is 366 days when it crosses a leap day and 365 when it does not.

Does the weekday count include public holidays?

No. It counts Monday to Friday across the inclusive span and nothing else, because holidays vary by country, by state and by year, and a wrong list is worse than no list. Use the weekday figure as your ceiling and take off the holidays that actually apply to you.

Why does the months figure have leftover days?

Because months are between 28 and 31 days long, so a span almost never divides into whole months. Complete months are counted first and the real days left over are shown next to them. Dividing the day count by 30 instead would be neater and wrong by up to several days a year.

Do timezones affect the answer?

No. The dates are treated as plain calendar dates in your own local time, not as timestamps, and the day count is rounded so a daylight saving change cannot turn a 23 hour day into a lost one. Nothing is sent to a server, so there is no server clock involved either.
